Fall Pest Prevention Tips

With cooler weather you may begin to see more pests coming into your home.  Pests and rodents are looking for a warm place with food and shelter and homes and businesses are prime real estate for them.  We often talk about the health risks and the nuisances that unwelcomed pests bring into a home.

The NPMA recommends the following steps to keep your home pest free this fall:

  • Screen attic vents and openings to chimneys.
  • Eliminate moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains.
  • Seal cracks and crevices on the outside of the home using caulk and steel wool. Pay close attention where utility pipes enter the structure.
  • Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly in sealed receptacles.
  • Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
  • Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house; keep shrubbery well trimmed.
  • Install door sweeps and repair damaged screens.
  • Inspect items such as boxes of decorations and grocery bags before bringing them indoors.

Cockroach Vs. The White House

There are many ‘issues’ that are addressed within the walls of the 213 year old White House.  Last week, a familiar battle began when a cockroach was spotted in the basement of the press offices.  Residents of the basement office have faced flooding, mousetraps, and mold in the past year.

But this isn’t the first unwelcomed guest to make its way into what is arguably the most noticeable building in the US.  In 1977, Jimmy Carter lead a war against mice that had invaded The White House.  When all was said and done, 61 mice had lost their battle against The White House.

It was just a cockroach, one of millions around the world. But this one had a White House address, making it pretty special. Well, special at least to the reporters with workspace in the often-troubled basement of the press offices. Already this year, they have been treated to flooding, soaked carpet, mousetraps and the wondrous odors of mold.

“It was the size of a small drone,” said Martha Joynt Kumar, professor of political science at Towson University, who led the effort Wednesday to capture the bug. Kumar, who has worked out of the press offices studying the president-press relationship for almost four decades, wanted to turn it into the General Services Administration, the agency responsible for the building. “I wanted to bag it so that the GSA would know what kind of issue we had,” she said. “I chased it. But it got away behind some wiring.”

Another New Ant Species Found in Georgia

Earlier this week we posted about ghost ants that had invaded a man’s recently purchased truck.  This was the first documented case of ghost ants in Georgia.  Today, we have news of the tawny crazy ant that has now been identified in Georgia.

University of Georgia Extension agent, James Morgan, found tawny crazy ants in an assisted living facility in Dougherty County.  Thousands of ants were found dead in a corner and more located on the outside of the building.

Morgan knew these ants were a different species than the ones he’s used to identifying in Georgia.  “They’re reddish in color, very tiny, and they run around and scurry really fast.  And they don’t march in a straight row like Argentine ants,” said Morgan.  So he sent them off to be examined by a UGA entomologist and were later confirmed as tawny crazy ants by Joe MacGown at the Mississippi Entomological Museum.

Tawny crazy ants are classified as a nuisance pest.  They invade in masses and are attracted to electrical sources such as computers, electrical boxes, etc.

Northwest offers great benefits to their team members, but one thing that really goes a long way, is how they truly value them.
