Scorpions

The Southern Unstriped Scorpion, Vaejovis carolinianus, is common throughout north Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee and as far north as Kentucky. Scorpions are ambush hunters: their eyesight is poor so they lay in wait for something to walk past.

Identification

• Scorpions are found in rocky terrain or in moist, wooded habitats

• Will readily enter homes during the spring and summer months

Threats

• Scorpions have a sting roughly equivalent to that of a wasp or hornet

• Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to the venom

Treatment

• Scorpions are generally difficult to control

• Like spiders, scorpions tread lightly and do not readily pick up residual sprays

• Control usually comes down to habitat modification and sealing entry points into the structure
