Baldfaced Hornets

Identification

  • Large 5/8-¾”

  • Black and white yellowjacket

  • Make large, grey paper nests that are located in high places

Environment

  • Build aerial nests in open/exposed areas (not a lot of interference from buildings, trees, etc.)

  • Nests may not be seen because of leaves

Threats

  • Nests can be large and unsightly

  • Strong potential for stings if the colony is located nearby or hidden by plants

  • Stings may be life threatening to sensitive individuals

Treatment

  • The nest can be located, treated with an appropriate product, and the nest removed and discarded

  • Baldfaced hornets are beneficial organisms and are therefore only controlled when they pose an immediate threat
