Yellowjackets

Identification

  • 3/8″-5/8″ long

  • Sleek appearance

  • Body is black and yellow striped, not fuzzy

Environment

  • Nests can be either up high or in the ground, depending on the type

  • Different species are found throughout the US

Threats

  • Fairly docile unless the nest is approached, then they become aggressive and sting, often repeatedly

  • Stings may be life threatening to sensitive individuals

Treatment

  • Must be done carefully to prevent the yellowjackets from interacting with people

  • The best time to treat is at night when most of the insects are back in the nest

  • Yellowjackets are beneficial organisms and are therefore only controlled when they pose an immediate and lasting threat
