Copperhead Snakes

Identification

  • Large snake (2-4 feet long with a heavy body)

  • Head is distinctly triangular shaped

  • Tan to brown with hour glass shaped darker bands running across the body

  • Juvenile copperheads have a distinct yellow tail tip

Environment

  • Found in semi-protected areas such as woods and swamps, may be found in suburban areas

  • Found throughout central and eastern US, excluding some southern portions of Georgia and all of Florida

Threats

  • Venomous snake

  • May bite if the snake is bothered

Treatment

  • Keep food sources away from the home

  • Use caution when outdoors at night in the summer

  • Preventative treatment with a product that snakes find repellent
